While the authorities struggle to assure the safety for the participants of the Belgrade Gay Pride scheduled for October 10, the Serbian doctor Miroljub Petrovic announced his clinic for the treatment of the homosexuality is just about to be opened.
“There are a few levels in the treatment of homosexuality. The first one is informative. We are trying to explain our patients that the sexual drive is fostered in our minds, and that the sexual intercourse is not a physiological need…” Petrovic said to Serbian dailyAlo.
A year ago, he opened a centre for the treatment of homosexuality, which he perceives as a “serious psychiatric illness that comes as a consequence of unhealthy life style, bad education and use of narcotics.” Accordingly, he had treated 20 patients so far.
Years ago, the American Psychiatric Association's board stated the treatment aimed solely at turning gays into heterosexuals can cause depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.
In the meantime, Petrovic also leads the Center for Natural Studies. Since his education seems to have majored in the field of geology, many question his medical competencies. But his biography states Petrovic is actually a graduate of the American International Institute of Original Medicine.
His latest public statements have caused mass outrage amongst the Serbian gay and lesbian organizations.
In a letter of protest, they have invited Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic to start an investigation in the work of Petrovic’s centre and clinic, asking if the Health Ministry actually provided his practice with the permission for work.
“We invite you to make a public statement that homosexuality is not an illness”, the letter read, reminding the results of the latest research have shown that 67% of Serbian citizens perceive homosexuality as sickness.
